Troop 278 Cabin Log

  October 2008

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hello to all scouts and families in Troop 278!  Committee members (parents) met in the Cook Cabin October 16 while Scout leaders (Greenbar) met in the Log Cabin. The next Committee/Greenbar meeting is Thursday, November 20 at 7:00.  Location will be announced.

Here is a synopsis of what was accomplished:

1. Position Reports

-- Committee Chair - Nick Maliszewskyj was out of town so Laurie Bohanan chaired the meeting.  Chris Bohanan will be handling advancements now for the troop.  Because of this alternate committee meeting locations were discussed.  We will see if MUMC is available for committee and Greenbar meetings.  Boards of Review will also need to be held at alternate location such as MUMC or the Bohanan home.  Because of this it may be necessary to have set nights for Boards of Review.  Equipment coordinator and medical forms coordinator positions are now vacant.  Please see Nick if you are interested in filling either of these positions.  Lisa Drewry presented a draft budget.  Some changes were discussed.  Lisa will email revised draft budget to Nick.

--Business discussed-

Christmas Tree Sales- This is a MAJOR fundraiser for our troop! And, scouts are able to earn Scout Bucks toward camps/ skiing trips. 185 trees were ordered.  Be watching for more information soon regarding the tree sales and sign-ups to sell.  Thank you, Charlotte Abney, for handling this again for us this year.  We are hoping on a delivery date of Nov. 28 (the morning after Thanksgiving). That way we can sell trees as we are setting up at Safeway and throughout the day. Trees will sell for $45-50 dollars. The suggestion was made to switch the signs – the one indicating the hours to be visible from Alt 40 at entrance to Safeway. Also, we will run a BLACK FRIDAY SPECIAL with all trees purchased on Black Friday sold at $5 off. A sign will need to be made and posted!

Tents - We will be ordering tents in the very near future.  We will be ordering 20 Taurus tents for $65 each tent.  Ground cloths and shipping will be extra.  These tents are 2 person tents with heavy zippers, 2 doors and vestibule for extra storage.  Nick will discuss tent order with Phil Ramsey and Lisa.

Reuse and Recycle OLD uniforms- Dr. Turell will have some old uniforms available for you to take or trade at the November 8 campout with the Webelos.  Webelos are welcome to take uniform items as well.

2.  Re-cap of Recent Camping Activities:

-- Fall Court of Honor – Held October 2.  Was well attended with plenty of food.  Next Court of Honor is December 4 at MUMC.  More about that later.

-- Webelos Woods – Both the setup weekend (Oct 3-4) and WW weekend (Oct 10-12) went well.  Troop did lots of work to help make this a very successful district event.   Weather was great and there was plenty of food.

-- District Campfire – Troop 278 was “host” for this event at Webelos Woods.  Troop set up the campfire area and Gary M., Nicholas B. and Rob B. emceed the event.  Heard lots of praise for their performance!  Campfire was well attended and we had plenty of participants.  Thanks to the boys who helped Laurie with the rope skit!  J

3.  Upcoming Fun:

Ski Trip to Timberline in West Virginia will be January 30- February 2. Dr. Maliszewskyj is the coordinator—and has already sent in a deposit to lock in our spot.  20 people can go. Women too, but plan early for alternate sleeping quarters! Sign up sheet will be posted in the scout cabin soon!

Fall Camporee – October 17-19 at Sumantown ParkTyler Kelley will be working his Eagle project at this event.

Zach Bergeron’s Eagle Project – October 25 at TJHS.  See calendar for more information.

Russell’s Eagle Court of Honor is tentatively scheduled for January 4.

Scouting for Food – November 1st is bag drop off and 8th is food pickup.  November 7th will be the pizza party and 8th will be the Webelos campout.

Winter Court of Honor is December 4 at 6:30pm at MUMC.  There will be a sign-up to bring lasagna, salad, bread, drinks or dessert.  Troop will provide paper products.

Summer Camps – Camp Rodney has been chosen for camp providing we can get signed up for one of the two weeks we want.  We are looking at week of July 5 or week of July 26 (other weeks in July are not available).  Somers and Adirondack were vetoed due to driving distance.  Cost is expected to be about $300 per scout.
