Troop 278 Cabin Log

 October   2006

Greenbar  and Committee met on  September 21. During this time, Scout Leaders (Greenbar Meeting)   met in the Log Cabin while interested parents (Committee Meeting) met in the Cooks Cabin to approve Scout happenings. Committee Meetings are open to ALL parents! This is a great way to offer input-- as well as stay informed. The next Greenbar / Committee meeting will be held October 19 at 7:00. Join us. Listed below are the highlights of each meeting:

1. Popcorn Sales-  Your Scout received an order form in the mail. Did you know that ½ of the profits your scout earns from his popcorn sale will be returned to him in the form of Scout Bucks?  Fax popcorn orders to Hank Fairchild @ 310-619-8574. Or, bring your order form to this Thursday’s Court of Honor. PICK UP YOUR ORDER at the Oct 12 meeting OR call Hank at 301-371-8478 to arrange a time for pick up!

2. George Kowalski donated an American Flag to the troop. It will be dedicated at the December Court of Honor. By doing it then, we hope that George (AND OTHER recent High School grad/scouts) will be home from college and in attendance.

3. Christmas tree sales- This is a wonderful way for Scouts to earn Scout Bucks. Unfortunately this year, we will not be able to get  trees from the same vendor. We will be buying 200 trees from a new supplier. Hank will call Charlotte Abney (Tree Chair) with the name of an equally wonderful tree broker.

4. Scout Dues- Dues need to be collected NOW! Hank will have a letter to hand out at the Sept. 28 Court Of Honor. Dues are $55 for Scouts, $45 for additional scouts in the same family, and $11 for Adult leaders. ALL dues are due to Judy Saccardi, Treasurer by Nov. 2.  Her address is 4305 Mica Ct, Middletown MD. 21769. Phone 371-7075.

 5. Camping Options-Kathy Barylski went on-line to look for next summer’s camping options and their reviews. She reported back to the Committee each camp’s distance away, programming options, and scout comments. The Committee narrowed it down to 5 options. Kathy will do additional research on these five camps and present them to Greenbar (Boy Leaders) for their input. Thanks for the great effort, Kathy!

6. Last night ( Sept. 20) Pack 278 had their first Pack Meeting right here at Camp Baker. Our Scouts provided skits, run-ons, and a cracker barrel including dutch-oven and box oven treats. The youth also helped the Webelos II cubs do an opening and closing ceremony. This is a great way to cultivate continued interest as the cubs look ahead to bridging to Scouts!

7. Many thanks to Mike Terrell and Hank Fairchild for mowing the grounds at Camp Baker! We would appreciate additional volunteers. There is now a mower right under the cook cabin. It is a commercial pull -start brand! Wear steel toed shoes and try out the new toy. A special invitation is extended to Dads who can’t chaperone etc. but wish to offer support to our troop in this way.

8. Fall Court Of Honor- The Fall Court Of Honor will be held at Camp Baker (Ridge Rd) at 7:00 on Thursday, Sept 28.  Five Scouts will move up in rank, and 80 merit badges will be handed out. Zachary Bergeron will emcee the event.  ALL scouts should attend wearing their Class A uniforms. Families, please bring lawn chairs and blankets. The troop will provide cider, donuts (and maybe hot chocolate-- depending on the weather.)  Nancy Kelley to handle)  MANY THANKS TO THE  MC CUCHEONS FOR PROVIDING FREE TO  THE TROOP  THEIR WORLD FAMOUS APPLE CIDER! Cups and napkins provided by Mr. Fairchild.

9. Treeland Camping - The troop held a camp-out at Treeland preparing for Webelos Woods. They constructed a monkey bridge across Middle Creek and a zip-line ride into the stream.

10. Webelos Woods - On Sept. 29-Oct.1 Our troop will help host the Webelos Woods event at Treeland in Myersville. This event is the kick-off for the Webelos to Scout transition. Boy Scout troops will demonstrate scout skills such as fire- building, sharp things, cooking, and orienteering among others. This will guide the younger boys in their transition from Cubs to SCOUTS!  Drew Kidwell is the grub master. So far, Scouts who have signed up to go are Josh, Russell, Drew, Nathan, and Zach. Call Drew ASAP if you want your name added to this list. Meet at Camp Baker at 5:30 on Friday, Sept 29 to carpool.

11. Joe Fairchild’s Eagle Project-  Joe's Eagle Project work day will be Oct. 14 at Taskers Field in Frederick.

12. Winter Court Of Honor Dinner/Ceremony- will either be at Middletown Amvets or MUMC. It will be in December. Scouts away at college are invited to reunite with their troop. We are looking for untapped talent:  What adult would like to coordinate food and decorations for this event? Let Mr. Fairchild know of your interest!  Stay tuned for exact date and location…

13.  Fall AT Hike-   We will be backpacking the north end of the Maryland Appalachian Trail the weekend of October 20.  SIGN UP is in the cabin! This will complete the entire Maryland section of the AT trail for those of you that did the south end last year.

14.  Halloween Party for Scouts will be held at their regular meeting time on Thursday, Oct. 26. Scouts can wear costumes. Dragons are to bring drinks and Golden Eagles are to bring snacks to share. Fun Halloween games will be played.

Webelos 2 Cubs and their leader, Brian Casey are invited to join us that afternoon! They will experience first hand Sat night- foil dinners and a sleep over. Sunday morning- pancakes! Weekend activities end 11:00 Sunday.  Sign up in log cabin!

16. Ski Trip to Timberline, West Virginia-   Dates and costs to be determined. Beth Tice will call Mr. Edelmann for details ( contacts/ fliers he has used in previous years) and get back to us. Be planning ahead for this fun outing sometime in January! Scouts/  brothers/ fathers to stay in bunk house. Mothers and sisters to stay in condo?

17. SAILING ADVENTURES- Troop 278 has registered for the week of Aug. 1-7 , 2007 for a SEABASE sailing trip to the Bahamas. Cost would be around $1,000. Interested scouts over 14 years old should speak to Mr. Ramsey ASAP to sign-up. Joe Kelley and John Tice are considering leading this adventure. Deposits of $100 are needed to hold your spot.

18. Adult Leaders are excited about the prospect of attending Philmont High Adventure Camp during the summer of 2008 in New Mexico. World traveler, Dr. Mike Turrell reports that it is still his ”favorite place on earth.” Is your curiosity peaked? Start saving money now for the $1,200 fees- not including air fare.

19. The next Greenbar / Committee Meeting will be held Thursday, October 19 at 7:00. A recording secretary will be needed for that meeting as I will not be there to take notes.
