Troop 278 Cabin Log

April 2008

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hello to all scouts and families in Troop 278!

Committee members (parents) met in the Cook Cabin on April 17 while Scout leaders (Greenbar) met in the Log Cabin. The next Committee/Greenbar meeting is  WEDNESDAY, May 14  at 7:00. Note change in night for this month only!

Here is a synopsis of what was accomplished:

Advancements:

Joe Fairchild’s Eagle Ceremony was held March 15. This well-attended special event served as a reminder of what can be accomplished when a Scout chooses to climb this highest of mountains with drive, dedication, and determination. Way to go, Joe!

Billy Saccardi’s Eagle ceremony will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 27 at The Frederick Arts Council. If you have not RSVP’d yet, call Judy Saccardi at 301-371-7075. Your RSVP will enable the Saccardi’s  to know much food to have on hand.  Thanks!

1. Position Reports

-- Committee Chair - Nick Maliszewskyj reports that the Troop Website is now fully operational.  Everyone should now be able to easily get on our web site at

www.troop278.org. Nick will be stepping down as Advancement Chair and turning the reins over to Peter Torres following the June 5 Court Of Honor.  Nick will still be Committee Chair, but now, when you need a Board Of Review, the go-to guy is Peter Torres. Mr. Torres can best be reached by email: PTOR@LOC.gov or on his cell at 202-674-0332.

Lisa Drewry will be our new treasurer starting in May.  Welcome aboard Lisa.  Many thanks for your many years of service, Judy Saccardi !  Still needed are adult Equipment Coordinators and a Popcorn “Kernel”.  Equipment Coordinators assess the needs and buy new tents, etc., as needed.  Popcorn “Kernels” handle ordering popcorn for the annual fundraiser.  Hal Noer was present as Optimist Representative.  Braddock Heights Optimists chartered and continue to support our troop financially.  Hal will be invited to the June Court of Honor.

-- Membership - Dargan Glaze is our Membership Chair. In March our Troop rechartered. If you haven’t yet paid your yearly dues, please do so now! 1st Scout - $65;  2nd Scout - $55;  Adult - $13. Note: When Cubs transfer to our troop, a $10 activity fee payable to our troop is collected. This fee supports transfer of their BSA membership and the purchase of a troop neckerchief.  Troop 278 re-chartered 29 dues- paying scouts.  Many adults too! Thanks for handling this, Dargan!

-- Tee shirts - Beth Tice reports that she has green Troop 278 Tee Shirts and a very few blue shirts still available. See/ call her if you’d like to purchase one.

2.  Re-cap of Recent Activities:

--Spring Camporee - was held March 28-30, in our own backyard at the Middletown Firemen’s Field; and received cool press from Gazette and Middletown Citizen. We think the huge bonfire could be seen for miles around.  Five boys were called out or tapped out for ORDER OF THE ARROW.  Congratulations Drew, Christian, Ian, Benji and John—as well as our Assistant Scoutmaster Nick Maliszewskyj.  This Appalachian Trail event, chaired by Alan Caho was called “Citizens Emergency Response Training: Be Prepared!”

--First Aid Meet – was held March 15 at the LDS Church on North Place in Frederick.  Of the 26 patrols present, ours came in 11th place!  Many thanks to Christian King, Ian Maliszewskyj, and John Glaze for all of their help and hard work.  Older scouts were their cheerleaders from the sidelines and helped share the pizza reward!

--Swim Meet – was held at Middletown High School on April 4.  Many thanks to Laurie Bohanan who pitched in  to cover for custodial duties so the event could go on as planned.  68 Scouts from 9 Boy Scout troops and 3 Cub Scout packs took part.  This was the 27th year that Dr. Turell has done a great job of putting this tremendously fun event together. Winners from each age level earned a trophy. Tyler Kelley, from our own Troop 278  was  fastest swimmer for 15-17 year olds. Way to go, ETK!

--Merit Badge Madness- A.T. Merit Badge Madness was held April 12. This day-only event was very successful with several T 278 boys earning badges such as cinematography and railroading.  Many of the counselors present were from Troop 278 as well.  Thanks for your support, parents! ( Drew’s mom , Kathy B. for securing MUMC too!)

--Antietam - Six boys joined a troop from New Jersey at Antietam for a weekend of fun.  Thanks to adults: John Tice and Kevin Hohl for all of your hard work!

--Webelos Bridging - Boys enjoyed the new zip line as six Cub Scouts bridged/ zipped over into our troop.  Welcome aboard:  Kolya Lautenberger, Gary Meats, Robert Bllumenauer, Noah Zearfoss, Morgan Miskell, and Nicholas Boulden. We’re grateful that two of their parents filled out Adult Leader Applications.

--Order of the Arrow Ordeal will be held at Camp Greentop the weekend of April 26.  This is for scouts who were tapped out on April 16.  Refer to packets given.  These boys are in for some wonderful surprises!

3. SUMMER CAMPS

-- Camp Philmont / Philmont Scout Ranch (in New Mexico)

The date for the Philmont expedition has been locked in for July 4 – 18. Scouts 14 and older are invited to this high adventure outing. Those going are: Tyler, Nathan, Josh, John G, Russell. Adults attending: Mr. Ramsey, Mr.  Tice  and Dr. Turell.   Second payment of $500.00 is  past due to Mrs. Saccardi. Dr. Turell bought the airline ticks and met with parents to review Philmont packets and itinerary.   There will be a few “shake down” trips planned to fully prepare these scouts/ leaders for the physical challenges /team-building that awaits them. Be sure to get your  medical exams scheduled!

-- Camp Minsi-  After last month’s Greenbar, Mr. Ramsey called around to the various camps to determine availability and found that Camp Minsi is available July 27-August 2.  We need to know now who is going to camp.  $100.00 deposits are needed as soon as possible (the full youth fee for camp is $275 due by June 1)..  Adults going are:  Dr. Maliszewskyj, Dr. Hohl, Mr. Drewery, and Mr. Blumenauer.  There will be a muck hike, so pack disposable clothing!  (“Literally!” adds Mrs. Kelley)

-- Camp Airy - This camp, located in Thurmont, MD, will run August 18-23. It’s a good camp to earn several “unusual” merit badges (Nuclear Science, Auto Mechanics, etc)! We need to have reservations to Council by May 1.  Deposit is $25.00 per scout. Adults are needed to go --or our boys can go with another troop if we do not have enough adults.  If you wish to go, contact Dr. Maliszewskyj ASAP!
