Troop 278 Cabin Log

Late January 2007

Committee met January 18. The NEXT Committee meeting is slated for Feb. 15.

This group of adults voted to use Troop funds for upcoming Swim Night at Ft. Detrick. Swim this coming Thursday from 6:30-8:00 PM. Patrol Leaders will call to remind their patrols of this activity. This outing is free to Scouts and $2.00 for additional family members. Improve water skills, have fun, and/or get Merit Badges signed off, if needed! Mr. and Mrs. Bergeron will do the needed paper work for our tour permit- no transportation involved. Meet t Ft. Detrick or call Mr. Ramsey.

February 3- It’s MERIT BADGE DAY! This district-wide event will be held at Camp Snyder in Haymarket, Virginia. Do the prerequisites before Camp. Scouts can work on completing “partial” Merit Badges this day.   Want to learn more? Here’s how: Go to Troop278.org and check out the links for Camp Snyder, as well as other upcoming district events!

Summer 2007 Camps…. Somers Camp in Stanhope, New Jersey will run July 8-14. Cost is $280 per scout. Adults are $80. Deposit due to Treasurer Mrs. Saccardi NO LATER THAN April 15. We hear there is a neat swim area. Visit the Somers Camp website at http://www.ppbsa.org/Cam/camwb30.htm  for more features. The site currently reserved for our troop is #14—located near the Scoutcraft /Mountain Biking area with a view of the lake. Among other things, this camp is known for its great First Year Camper Program. That is good news since we are expecting nine Cubs from Pack 278 to bridge to our Troop. Dr. Malisczewskyj  will be one adult leader. Perhaps Mr. Mann and Mr. Fairchild too? Watch future e mails from Dr. M for info and payment schedule for this trip. He will also contact Pack 278 to invite them! Interested scouts can sign up in the log cabin. Once boys have signed up, parents will be asked to send a permission slip in – indicating that both the boy AND the parent/s know his name is on the sign –up list!

High Adventure Sailing Camp in the Bahamas! Mr. Kelley and Mr. Tice will be taking interested Scouts, age 14 and older to Sea Base Camp. Sign up NOW in  the log cabin. Camping dates are August  1- 8.  Initial deposit to ensure a firm commitment will soon be due to Mrs. Saccardi.

Another Camping Opportunity….

Camp Airy will be held right AT Camp Airy this summer. This is indeed exciting news so that there will be no space issues. Camp Airy will be held  the week of August 20-25. “This is a great place to earn lots of Merit Badges.” Skills are well taught, and there is plenty of structure for younger and older scouts. As an added bonus, prior to going, Dr. M will be updating for each Scout all the merit badges needed on the trail to Eagle rank.

And now… Looking ahead to camping opportunities for 2008 (You read that right) :

Ski Trip To Timberline in West Virginia January 26-27, 2008.  Do you think it will have snowed by then?

Philmont- Tentative dates for this high adventure camp are August 5-17, 2008.  Mr. Ramsey is trying to switch these dates to accommodate Scouts involved with High School sports. He will devise a payment schedule and ask for a deposit soon so that we might get a handle on the number of those wishing to participate. Start saving your pennies now. Cost: $1,500-$1,800?

TOUR PERMITS! John and Rebecca Bergeron , Tour Permit Coordinators need OUR help! They need information from each and every parent! Please fill in the info below and send it with your son, or via e mail to Rebecca.Bergeron@fcps.org  by the next troop meeting. That way if/when we drive, all info is at hand. They will keep a data base. None of this info will be shared.
