Troop 278 Cabin Log

Mid March  2007

Committee met in the Cook’s Cabin   March 15. The NEXT Committee meeting is slated for April 19. All interested parents are invited to join us. Greenbar ( Scout Leaders) meet at the same time in the Log Cabin.

SWIM MEET !  The Swim Meet, open to Scouts and Cubs in entire District will be held at Middletown High School. This was rescheduled due to the 3/16  snow. It will now be held Friday, March 23-- Same time (7:00)  and same place. Cost is $5.00. Run by Dr. Turrell, this is a great way to get  sign offs or just compete for fun. Come with suits and towels. Invite cubs and scouts from other packs/ troops too. ADULTS: Timers and ribbon writers needed. See Dr. Turrell as soon as you arrive! Patrol Leaders, call your patrols to remind them of this change in date.

March 30-April 1 is the Appalachian Trail District Spring Camporee at Walkersville Watershed. We are past due on submitting our registration, so go on line for info. As discussed at 3/15 Greenbar, Patrol Leaders should be calling patrols to determine #s. In turn they should call SPL Tyler Kelley 371-4922 with a final count so he can let Mr. Ramsey know a final roster of scouters and scouts. This year’s theme is “Old Time Scouting.” Cost is $10.00, and our Troop is paying that fee.

Wednesday, April 25 (?)- Pack 278 will be Bridging to Scouts. All Scouts in Troop 278 should be at Camp Baker by 6:45 in Full Class A Uniforms for this exciting event. (Who will check to see that we have enough neckerchiefs for this group of incoming Scouts?)

New Scout Camp Out May 11-13 held at Camp Baker. This is Mother’s Day weekend. Scouts with previous school or family commitments MUST let Troop know (on attendance sheet) which meals / activities they CAN be here for. We need a good showing of Scouts COMMITTED TO STAYING THROUGH THE WEEKEND! Be good role models-- and build a sense of “Troop” for these new Scouts and their leaders. We are excited by the level of enthusiasm of these Cubs and Leaders!

Citizenship Merit Badge Day will be May 19 at 7:30AM   at LDS Church Walkersville. Dr. M is the point man. Go on line for info, but be sure to register with Dr .M.  He, in turn will submit names of those attending.   Are your prerequirements complete for Community? Nation?  World?  ( See Dr. M.) Take your Blue Card with you! April 30 is the deadline, but only 30 scouts can be in each session. Call Dr. M now!

White Water Rafting anyone?  Raft with Crew 247  ( Urbana Adventure Crew) from April 27-29.  Cost- including food and lodging is $125. More info to follow from Mr. Ramsey.

June Court Of Honor- How are advancements coming along? The June Pot Luck Dinner and Court of Honor will be here soon! Tie up loose ends and finish up those rank advancements. (Do I sound like your mother?)  Mark calendars for Thursday, June 14  (? ) at Camp Baker.  This might be an incentive to WORK HARDER on advancements! A Friend of Scouting will be there, so bring your checkbooks. This is also a great way to welcome lots of new Scouts AND THEIR FAMILIES (who will be bridging from Cubs to Scouts April 25) to our Troop. Let’s ALL show up with food for the  picnic and  hearty warm handshakes!

CURRENT EVENTS:

FIRST AID MEET A SUCCESS! Congratulations to our troop. Troop 278 placed 9th and 14th of the dozens of troops represented. Thanks Nathan, Drew, Zach, Tyler, Josh, and John Glaze. Thanks too to the Fairchilds for their help with preparing the boys for this meet.

FREEZE OUT! Even though there were few Scouts able to go this year, way to go for going through with the planned trip to Beutler Cabin in PA! Leaders Mr. Ramsey and Mr. Beutler just might earn themselves a Polar Bear patch along with campers,  Zach B. and Josh R.

Sweat Shirt Sale- Thanks to Beth Tice who will be checking into ordering additional sweat shirts for the troop. Be watching future emails for ordering info.

TOUR PERMITS! John and Rebecca Bergeron , Tour Permit Coordinators need OUR help! They need information from each and every parent! Please fill in the info below and send it with your son, or via e mail to Rebecca.Bergeron@fcps.org  by the next troop meeting. That way if/when we drive, all info is at hand. They will keep a data base. None of this info will be shared.

Summer 2007 Camps….

Somers Camp in Stanhope, New Jersey will run July 8-14. Cost is $280 per scout. Adults are $80. Total fee of $280  is due to Treasurer Mrs. Saccardi NO LATER THAN April 15. We hear there is a neat swim area. Visit the Somers Camp website at http://www.ppbsa.org/Cam/camwb30.htm  for more features. The site currently reserved for our troop is #14—located near the Scoutcraft /Mountain Biking area with a view of the lake. Among other things, this camp is known for its great First Year Camper Program. That is good news since we are expecting nine Cubs from Pack 278 to bridge to our Troop. Dr. Malisczewskyj, Mr. Mann, Mr. Drewry and Mr. Fairchild will be adult leaders. Dr. M will forward info to Pack 278. Watch future e mails from Dr. M. Interested scouts can sign up in the log cabin. Once boys have signed up, parents will be asked to send a permission slip in – indicating that both the boy AND the parent/s know his name is on the sign –up list!

High Adventure Sailing Camp in the Bahamas! Mr. Kelley and Mr. Tice will be taking interested Scouts, age 14 and older to Sea Base Camp. Sign up NOW in the log cabin. Camping dates are August  1- 8.  Initial deposit  of $ 275 to ensure a firm commitment  is  NOW due to Mrs. Saccardi. SO far, those who have signed up include: Tyler, Nathan, Zach B, Russell A, Josh R, and Josh B(?)

Camp Airy will be held right AT Camp Airy this summer. This is indeed exciting news so that there will be no space issues. Camp Airy will be held the week of August 20-25. “This is a great place to earn lots of Merit Badges.” Skills are well taught, and there is plenty of structure for younger and older scouts. As an added bonus, prior to going, Dr. M will be updating for each Scout all the merit badges needed on the trail to Eagle rank.  Junior Staff is needed. Interested? If so, speak with Mr. Ramsey for contact info.

And now… Looking ahead to camping opportunities for 2008 (You read that right) :

Ski Trip to Timberline in West Virginia January 26-27, 2008.

Philmont- Tentative dates for this high adventure camp are August 5-17, 2008.  Mr. Ramsey is trying to switch these dates to accommodate Scouts involved with High School sports. He will devise a payment schedule and ask for a deposit soon so that we might get a handle on the number of those wishing to participate. Start saving your pennies now. Cost: $1,500-$1,800?

And now, for some meeting dates and activities in the NEAR future, read charts on next 2 pages.  Please transfer all dates to your home calendars!
