Troop 278 Cabin Log

January 31, 2008

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hello to all scouts and families in Troop 278!

The Committee/Greenbar Meeting on January 17, 2008 was snowed out.

Greenbar, however, met before the troop meeting on January 24, 2008. The next

Committee/Greenbar meeting is February 21 at 7:00 pm. All are welcome!

This Cabin Log will be brief and will cover a few informational items.

Membership – Dargan Glaze is our Membership Chair. In March our Troop

will recharter. If you haven’t yet paid your yearly dues, please do so now! 1st

Scout- $65; 2nd Scout- $55; Adult- $13.

Ski Trip The January 25 ski outing to Timberline was a blast! We had

buckets of snow and skied for a day and a half. We have placed a reservation for

Superbowl weekend next year so we can have another awesome adventure.

Spring Camporee - Will be held March 28-30 at the Middletown Firemen’s

Field. This Appalachian Trail event, chaired by Alan Caho is called “Citizens

Emergency Response Training: Be Prepared!”

Summer Camp – At the January Greenbar meeting the youth leaders voted

for their choice of summer camps. The scouts voted for (in order of preference):

Minsi, Rodney, Broad Creek, Bowman, and Henson and have decided that the

preferred dates for camp will be either July 27 – August 2, 2008 or June 22 –

June 28, 2008. Über Scoutmaster Ramsey will call around to these camps to see

which camp we can get for which dates. Stay tuned!

Philmont - Philmont Scout Ranch (in New Mexico)– The date for the

Philmont expedition has been locked in for July 4 – 18. Scouts 14 and older are

invited to this high adventure outing. Have you paid for your trip? (Total cost of

$1400 or the next payment of $500 is due to Judy Saccardi NOW) There will be a

few “shake down” trips planned to fully prepare scouts for the physical challenges

that await them. ALL scouts will be invited to join in these local shake

downs.

Camp Airy - This camp, located in Thurmont, MD, takes place the week of

August 18 - 24. It’s a good camp to earn several unusual merit badges! If you are

14 or older and would like to serve on the Junior staff, interviews will be held at

the Braddock Heights Fire Hall at 9:00 am on February 23 and March 1.

Merit Badge Opportunities – Did you know that it is actually possible to

earn merit badges outside of summer camp?!? Here are a few possibilities:

Merit Badge Madness – There will be an A.T. Merit Badge Madness Event

the weekend of April 11-13. Stay tuned for details.

Nuclear Science Merit Badge – Dr. Maliszewskyj and Mr. Rick Sprow

(troop 792) will be running an all-day merit badge event at the NIST

Center for Neutron Research in Gaithersburg on Saturday, April 5.

Contact Dr. Maliszewskyj if you want to participate.

Citizenship Merit Badge Day – This is an opportunity to earn those three

Eagle required merit badges. This will be held at the Walkersville LDS on

Saturday, May 17. Contact Dr. Maliszewskyj if you want to participate.

Family Life, Personal Management, Personal Fitness – Why wait until

you’re seventeen and a half to work on these Eagle required merit

badges? You can start Family Life at any time. To find out about these

badges, contact Beth Tice.

Winter Camping – The annual winter camping trip to the Beutler Cabin is

set for the weekend of February 16, 2008. We will be camping with troop 1812.

The troop will meet at Camp Baker at 9:00 am on Saturday, February 16 and will

return during the afternoon of Monday, February 18. Sign up in the cabin.

Torsk Trip – Wonder what it’s like to sleep on a submarine? Wonder no

further. We will be spending the night aboard the U.S.S. Torsk in Baltimore

Harbor on February 29 and visiting attractions in Baltimore on March 1. The troop

meets at Camp Baker at 5:30 pm on Friday, February 29 and will return during

the afternoon of March 1. The cost is $60. Sign up with Mr. Ramsey.

Respectfully submitted,

Nick Maliszewskyj
