Troop 278 Cabin Log

September 2009

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hello to all scouts and families in Troop 278!

The troop committee and scout leaders met at Middletown United Methodist Church on September 17. The next committee/greenbar meeting is October 22 (please note the date) at 7:00 pm at MUMC.

Here is a synopsis of what was accomplished:

1. Position Reports

Committee Chair – Dues were discussed.  In light of National increasing registration fees, it became necessary to increase dues.  This year’s dues will be:  $70 for 1st youth, $60 each for other youth in same family, $20 for adults and $20 transfer fee (for youth transferring into unit).  $20 transfer fee for bridging scouts covers neckerchief, handbook and troop t-shirt.  Recharter is earlier this year so it is very important that everyone get their dues in by the deadline.

18-21 year olds – The troop agreed to pay registration for 18-21 yr old assistant scoutmasters from the troop while they are active in the troop or at college.  Any not currently on our charter will need to fill out adult leader application if they wish to be carried on our roster.

Website – Dr. Nick will check into options for hosting our website.  Troop will be looking for a youth webmaster.  This is a newly created leadership position.

Parent’s Guide – Dr. Nick is updating the Troop 278 Parent’s Guide.  He will be adding new fees and grubbing policy.

New grubbing policy – In response to a number of problems and uncertainties with the process of shopping and cooking for outings, the scoutmasters and committee have developed a new grubbing policy for all outings, effective immediately.

Scouts will have to pay $15 to the troop two weeks in advance of any outing. The scout serving as grubmaster will submit receipts to the troop treasurer after the outing and will be reimbursed up to $15/scout. The grubmaster can request an advance one week before the outing for assistance with shopping.

It is our hope that this new policy will simplify the grubbing procedure for all concerned.

Advancement – Chris Bohanan went over some changes in advancement.  He noted that the new handbook is available and changes to advancement are effective January 1, 2010.  Boys will be required to go by those new changes next year.  Major changes include: EDGE model, Leave No Trace requirements, recruiting for 1st class and saving money for 2nd class.

Christmas Trees – Charlotte Abney will help with the Christmas trees sales again this year.  We are looking for someone to volunteer to help her.  Please contact Dr. Nick if you are willing to help with this important fundraiser.  Charlotte has already ordered the trees and placed a deposit.  Trees will probably come the day after Thanksgiving so put that on your calendar.  We went back to 175 trees this year which we will be selling for $50 each.  We will be getting new signs since one of them blew away last year!  Shifts will be the same as last year.

Den Chiefs were discussed.  Most of our boys eligible to be den chiefs are now serving in assigned dens.  Laurie Bohanan and Dr. Nick are working on getting den chief training held soon.

Eagle Projects – Both Drew and Christian are working on Eagle projects.  Please be watching for more information on when they will be held so you can help.  Christian’s is tentatively set for afternoon of November 7 (after SFF bag drop off).

Patrol meetings are now being held.  Patrols are currently working on flags and yells.  If you do not know when patrol meetings are, please check with patrol leader.  Scouts please remember to tell your parents about patrol meeting before they happen.

Welcome to the Kepler family who recently transferred to the troop.  Both parents will be serving as adult leaders so be watching for their assignments soon.

2.  Re-cap of Recent Activities:

Camp Rodney – Camp went well with boys earning some good merit badges.

Camp Airy – We had many boys attend as campers and as staff.  Next year we must have a parent/leader sign up to go the full week or boys likely will not be able to participate.

Bike Rodeo and Olympics was September 19.  We had great participation from the troop.  Thanks to all who volunteered.

3.  Upcoming Events:

Court of Honor – October 1 at Baker.  Please be there at 7pm for setup with the Court of Honor starting promptly at 7:30pm.  Carolyn King will bring the cider and donuts.

Webelos Woods setup – October 3.  Meet at Baker at 9am to car pool to Treeland (behind Myersville McDonald’s).  There is no overnight camping planned.

Webelos Woods Weekend – October 9-10.  Troop is running the Monkey Bridge and Zipline.  Meeting times will be announced later. Sign up in the main cabin now.

Camporee is October 23-25 at Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship.  Troop will be presenting pioneering.  If you are planning to attend, you should have already told your patrol leader.

SPL elections will be held in November.  Nominations will be held November 5 with the election on November 12.

Scouting for Food – bag drop off day is November 7.  We have Braddock Heights/Ridge Road.  Pickup is November 14.  Camping that weekend is November 13 -15.  Other troops will be participating.  More information will be provided about

this.

Winter Court of Honor is December 3 at MUMC.

Seabase 2010 is Out Island Adventure (Big Munson Island) for July 19 - July 25, 2010. We have two crews for a minimum of 12 or a maximum of 16 participants.  If you are planning to attend, you need to pay your $100 ASAP.  You will need to use the Seabase Medical Form, not the BSA medical form.  This will be first come – first served with a waiting list if we have more than 16.  This number includes adults.
