Troop 278 Cabin Log

June 2009

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hello to all scouts and families in Troop 278!

The troop committee and scout leaders met at Middletown United Methodist Church on June 18. The next committee/greenbar meeting is Aug 13 at 7:00 pm at MUMC.

Here is a synopsis of what was accomplished:

1. Position Reports

Committee Chair – Last month the troop welcomed Kathy Barylski as Outings Coordinator. This month we tacked on medical forms coordinator since that position fits right in with Outings. We still need an equipment coordinator. Please contact Nick ((301)371-7070) if you would be willing to help.

Dr. Kevin Hohl was installed as Scoutmaster at the Court of Honor.  Mark Boulden and Jim Mann were installed as Assistant Scoutmasters.  Thank you for stepping up! The committee thanks Mr. Ramsey for his four years of distinguished service to this unit.

New grubbing policy – In response to a number of problems and uncertainties with the process of shopping and cooking for outings, the scoutmasters and committee have developed a new grubbing policy for all outings, effective immediately.

Scouts will have to pay $15 to the troop two weeks in advance of any outing. The scout serving as grubmaster will submit receipts to the troop treasurer after the outing and will be reimbursed up to $15/scout. The grubmaster can request an advance one week before the outing for assistance with shopping.

It is our hope that this new policy will simplify the grubbing procedure for all concerned.

Mowing Camp BakerOur meeting place needs some TLC. Our troop mows the field at Camp Baker during the summer. If every family mows once during the summer and we only mow once every two weeks, this will be a snap! If families work together each mowing session will be much easier too. Check our troop website (http://www.troop278.org) to sign up for your shift. Login as “278” with password “mowing”.

Christmas Trees – Charlotte Abney will help with the Christmas trees sales again this year.  We are looking for someone to volunteer to help her.  Please contact Dr. Nick if you are willing to help with this important fundraiser.

2.  Re-cap of Recent Activities:

AT Hike on June 5 went well.  Seems the boys learned a bit about backpacking and food.

Court of Honor – Was held at MUMC and went very well.  Attendance was good and we ate well.  Thank you, Robin Maliszewskyj for coordinating that for us!

Tyler Kelley’s Eagle Court of Honor was June 13.  Many people from the troop attended and participated.  Great job, Tyler!

3.  Upcoming Events:

Camp Baker Cleanup – postponed again to June 25.  Here’s hoping for some dry weather so we can get the cleanup done. Bring work gloves, string trimmers, lawn mowers, wood-splitting tools, and a lots of enthusiasm!

Zach Bergeron’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held June 28 at 2pm at Holy Family.  Please RSVP to guitarshark90@aol.com if you are planning to attend.

Camp Rodney – Elk Neck, MD, July 5-11. There is one slot left at the cheaper ($305) rate. Contact Nick if you are not signed up to go but would like to go. Medical forms for all participants are due now to Kathy Barylski. There will be a parent’s meeting to discuss last minute camp questions at Camp Baker on June 25 at 7:30 pm.  Group will be leaving Safeway at 10 am on July 5.  They will be returning around 12 pm on July 11.

Prep for Lenhok’sin Hike- Will be July 17-19.  More info to follow.

Lenhoksin Goshen, VA, July 26 – August 2. The crew has formed and will begin a series of shakedown hikes to get in shape for the trek.

Camp Airy Thurmont, MD, August 18-22. If you can’t make it to Camp Rodney this summer, consider Camp Airy, run locally the week before school starts. Camp Airy has an excellent first year camper program and a number of truly unusual merit badge opportunities. Contact Nick ASAP if you are interested. We also need adults to camp (in cabins) with the troop that week.

Reystown – There is the possibility of a canoe trip to Reystown, PA in August with troop 1812.

Annual Planning Meeting will be July 25 at 10 am at Dr. Nick’s house.
