Troop 278 Cabin Log

  August 2008

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hello to all scouts and families in Troop 278!

Congratulations to Russell Abney, who passed his Eagle Board of Review while up at Camp Airy on August 21! Russell will be attending Frostburg University in the Fall and mentioned that he hopes to stay active in the troop when he returns home from college. Way to go Russell!

Committee members (parents) met in the Cook Cabin August 14, while Scout leaders (Greenbar) met in the Log Cabin. The next Committee/Greenbar meeting is  Thursday, Sept. 18  at 7:00. (Nancy won’t be there. Note taker /Newsletter Editor needed)

Here is a synopsis of what was accomplished:

1. Position Reports

-- Committee Chair - Nick Maliszewskyj thanks everyone for help with mowing Camp Baker. If you have not yet taken a turn this spring or summer, visit our web site and sign up at www.troop278.org. Remember that when you need a Board of Review, the go-to guy is Peter Torres who can best be reached at: PTOR@LOC.gov or on his cell at 202-674-0332.  New treasurer, Lisa Drewry has been busy with Camp receipts and payments! Lisa now uses Quicken and the fiscal year for our troop is Sept 1- Aug 31. She used last year’s data to make a budget for 2009-2010. Many thanks, Lisa! Thanks to Dargan Glaze for completing and updating our Troop Roster. Adults who are not on the roster MAY be asked to fill out a Registration Form. This will ensure that background checks are complete for all adults working with our Scouts. Many thanks to Nathan Tice and family for inventorying and developing a list of troop equipment. This will help with improved accountability.  Still needed is a Popcorn “Kernel” to handle ordering popcorn for this annual fundraiser.

--Business discussed-

Summer mowing- Sign up to help cut the grass at Camp Baker! Here’s how:

Go to www.Troop278.org. Click on “mowing.”  User name is “278” and the password is “mowing”.  If you don’t sign up to mow, be expecting a call from Nick to be assigned a time to mow. Many hands make light work.

Christmas Tree Sales- Many thanks to Charlotte Abney for again coordinating/ ordering  Christmas tees. This is a MAJOR fundraiser for our troop! And,  scouts are able to earn Scout Bucks toward camps/ skiing trips. Committee voted to have Charlotte place an order for 175-200 trees (depending upon if there is a deal/break$$   for  increments of twenty five) We are hoping on a delivery date of Nov. 28 ( the morning after Thanksgiving) . That way we can sell trees as we are setting up at Safeway and throughout the day. Depending on the cost of freight, trees will sell for $ 45-50 dollars. The suggestion was made to switch the signs – the one indicating the hours to be visible from Alt 40 at entrance to Safeway. Also, we will run a BLACK FRIDAY SPECIAL with all trees purchased on Black Friday sold at $5  off. A sign will need to be made and posted!

Use of Camp Baker by Other Units- Steve Crowe, a leader for Venture Crew 1998 (NCAC troop for 14-21 year old youth) would like permission to use Camp Baker the first and third Tuesdays of each month. This troop does a lot of pistol training and weapon shooting. With Baker Trustee Mike Turell on board with it, Committee voted to approve sharing Camp Baker. (Ed note: I witnessed Laurie Bohanan hit up Mr. Crow to work at Day Camp next summer and Mr. Ramsey asked Mr. Crow to help with Webelos Woods, so this looks like a mutually advantageous relationship! NTK ;-)

Suggestions for Annual Planning- Select a date and place for Summer Camps SOON—and don’t pick the first OR last weeks a camp is in operation.( Staff is training or tired those weeks)  Third week of camp is best, as that’s when all staff  is  in the groove. Lock in dates and place --and send payments/paper work by December!

Court Of Honor- We picked a Fall Court of Honor date: Thursday, Oct 2 at 7:00 at Camp Baker. Continue working toward advancements and save the date. Nancy to order 6 doz. donuts. McCutcheon’s famous cider to again be donated?

Boy Scout uniforms are changing!  Don’t panic. They are available, but not mandatory! Google” New Scout Uniform” and you can see a photo of it. (You’ll note similar color, patches tinted, long sleeved shirt is  made to roll up or down, belt clip much sturdier) Again, your current uniform is just perfect for Troop 278. New uniforms are available at Trailside Outfitters in Brunswick.

Reuse and Recycle OLD uniforms- Dr. Turell will have some old uniforms available for you to take-- or trade at the October Court of Honor. If YOU have extra uniform parts at your house, please bring them to pass along. Check out the box of uniforms to sort through in the Cook Cabin sometime  during the evening of the Fall Court of Honor on October 2.

2.  Re-cap of Recent Camping Activities:

-- Camp Philmont / Philmont Scout Ranch (in New Mexico)

Seven  crew left  July 4 – 19. Tyler, Nathan, Josh, Russell, Mr. Ramsey, Mr. Tice and Dr. Turrell went. Their Troop Guide for the first two days was Jimmie Harris, a fellow MHS grad! The group climbed mountain peeks, had tomahawk throwing contests, survived hail storms, and witnessed beautiful scenery during this adventure!   A couple weeks after their return, they had a pizza/swim reunion at the Kelley’s with Jimmie (now home resting for college) , as well as some men who went to Philmont in 1954! All had great time sharing photos and memories!

-- Camp Minsi  Eleven Scouts and 4 leaders (Dr. Maliszewskyj, Dr. Hohl, Mr. Drewry and Mr. Lautenberger) went July 27-August 2. Our boys earned 35-40 merit badges! Cool temperatures were welcomed. Six people participated in the infamous muck hike, and the boys rallied to perform a well- received skit on the last night of camp. They took a detour/road trip to Cabella’s Outdoor Store on their return trip!

-- Camp Airy – Eight scouts and several adults participated in Camp Airy, the one-week merit badge camp run in Thurmont by scouters in the AT and Catoctin Mountain districts. Dr. M thanks all of the troop adults who gave their time to stay in the troop cabin (Mr. Blumenauer, Mrs. Barylski, and Mr. Bohanan). Our boys came back with an impressive haul of merit badges and fun. Next year is the 50th anniversary of Camp Airy. It should be wild. Put the end of August on your calendars!

3.  Upcoming Fun:

Thursday, August 28 --Swimming at Ft Detrick Outdoor Pool- Bring your suit and a towel, as well as snacks to share. This is a rescheduled event, as the 8/5 one was cancelled due to lightning.  Zach Bergeron is in charge.

Ski Trip to Timberline in West Virginia will be January 30- February 2. Dr. Maliszewskyj is the new coordinator—and has already sent in a deposit to lock in our spot.  20 people can go. Women too, but plan early for alternate sleeping quarters! Be prepared to work tree sales to earn Scout Bucks toward this trip!  More info to follow.

Respectfully submitted,
