Troop 278 Cabin Log

 May 2008

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hello to all scouts and families in Troop 278!

Committee members (parents) met in the Cook Cabin on May 14 while Scout leaders (Greenbar) met in the Log Cabin. The next Committee/Greenbar meeting is Thursday, June 19 at 7:00.

Here is a synopsis of what was accomplished:

Advancements:

Billy Saccardi’s Eagle ceremony was held on Sunday, April 27 at The Frederick Arts Council. On display were the murals Billy and co. painted as part of his Eagle Project. It was great seeing the room in use as vendors sold their artistic wares. Congratulations Billy, on the masterpiece of earning Eagle—and the murals too! Billy’s proud parents announced that Billy was recently inducted into the National Art Honor Society. Way to go!

Drew Kidwell recently earned his Star Rank. Benji Drewry’s Board of Review was held May 14 and he earned the rank of Life. Good job, Scouts!

1. Position Reports

-- Committee Chair - Nick Maliszewskyj reports that the Troop Website is now fully operational.  Everyone should now be able to easily get on our web site at

www.troop278.org. Nick will be stepping down as Advancement Chair and turning the reins over to Peter Torres following the June 5 Court Of Honor.  Nick will still be Committee Chair, but now, when you need a Board Of Review, the go-to guy is Peter Torres. Mr. Torres can best be reached by email: PTOR@LOC.gov or on his cell at 202-674-0332.

Business discussed:

a)     So that more Scouts can be rotated through leadership positions, new term limits for Senior Patrol Leaders were announced. SPL’s will now serve for 6 month periods.

       b) Troop 278 will continue meeting through the summer months every other

Thursday. Exceptions are when Scouts are away at camp.

       c) Spring mowing- Sign up to help cut the grass at Camp Baker! Here’s how:

Go to www.Troop278.org. Click on “mowing.”  User name is “278” and the password is “mowing”. There will also be a sign up sheet passed around at the June 5 Court Of Honor.

Lisa Drewry will be our new treasurer.  Welcome aboard, Lisa.  Many thanks for your many years of service, Judy Saccardi!  Still needed is an adult Equipment Coordinator to work with the Quartermaster to assess the needs and buy new tents, etc. as needed! Right now equipment is stored in a Scout trailer at the Tice’s house. Ideally if an adult were Equip. Coordinator and his son the Quartermaster, all old gear could be taken care of, acceptable gear organized, and new gear purchased and stored. Do you have room on your property for a trailer? If not, still take the position/s--and the trailer can remain at the Tice’s. Also needed is a Popcorn “Kernel” to handle ordering popcorn for the annual fundraiser.

Treasurer- Our treasury looks good. However, Scouts attending summer camps must mail all final payments to Judy Saccardi by May 29.  Email her at mommyshakes@verizon.net if you need to know your Scout Buck balance to offset expenses. Otherwise, here are balances due to her by May 29:

Camp Airy           $175

Camp Minsi         $275

Camp Philmont   $500

Mail checks to Judy Saccardi , 4305 Mica Ct Middletown MD 21769

Tee shirts - Beth Tice reports that she has green ($10) Troop 278 Tee Shirts and a very few blue shirts ($5) still available.  She’ll have them available for purchase at the June 5th Ct Of Honor. They make GREAT shirts to take to camp!

Elections!

During recent nominations and elections, Troop 278 has a new Senior Patrol Leader! Welcome aboard Zachary Bergeron, new SPL.

2.  Re-cap of Recent Activities:

--Webelos Bridging - Boys enjoyed the new zip line as six Cub Scouts bridged/zipped over into our troop.  Welcome aboard:  Kolya Lautenberger, Gary Meats, Robert Blumenauer, Noah Zearfoss, Morgan Miskell, and Nicholas Boulden. We’re grateful that two of their parents filled out Adult Leader Applications.   New scouts and their families will be introduced at the June Ct of Honor.

--Order of the Arrow Ordeal was held at Camp Greentop the weekend of April 26. Six of our Scouts experienced wonderful surprises—which we can’t write about, because you TOO may one day be tapped for OA! Christian King was elected Leader of the Dance Team. (Might Christian then be ”Lord of the Dance?”)

Program Launch –was held May 13 at Jefferson Ruritan.  District leadership was introduced to units and important information about next year’s calendar was given out. Nick said ideas were offered too, about possible Eagle Projects in Frederick Co.

District Dinner –was held May 15 at Middletown Volunteer Fire Department.  Our own Mrs. Laurie Bohanan was honored as the Carol Bartlett Scouter of the Year in recognition of all the work she has put into the district. Congratulations Mrs. Bohanan!
