  Summer 2007 Camp Recaps...

The Whitewater Rafting Trip – held June 15-17 was a huge success. The weather was good. Boys camped and rafted, and even slid down natural limestone water slides. All in attendance agreed that they would raft the “lower Yuck” (near Ohiopyle State Park) in a minute! To hear about their adventures, see Mr. Ramsey, Nathan, Russell, Ian, Jesse, Hank Jr., or Dr. Maisczewskyj.

Somers Camp – Scouts had a great time at Camp Somers in New Jersey.  They worked hard to collectively earn 38 merit badges and 7 partials.  Dr. Maliszewskyj reports that it was a small camp with good food.  Bears were seen wandering through the campsite!  Our troop made themselves proud by dominating every competition:  Camp-Wide Games, Shoot-Outs (Archery, Rifles, Shot Gun) and Camp Cooking!  Our boys prepared a Hawaiian feast which included Hawaiian pizza in a dutch oven, virgin pina coladas, and pineapple upside down cakes (Sign me up!).  Dr. M will distribute Camp Somers badges at the October 11 Court of Honor.

Sailing Camp in the Bahamas! Russell Abney reported that those at Sea Base, Bahamas also had a wonderful adventure.  In his opinion, it was superior to last year’s Florida Sea Base due to the greater amount of sailing opportunities.  Under the direction of Crew Chief “Chiefy” Zachary Bergeron, the boys cooked their own food and snorkeled each day.  Wildlife included sea turtles, barracuda, eagle rays and nurse SHARKS!

Who’s In Charge? Newly-elected Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) Russell Abney recently attended Impeesa (a/k/a:  “The Wolf That Never Sleeps”) at Camp Goshen in Virginia.  While there, he took several classes in Leadership designed to benefit SPL’s and their troops.  Thanks, Russell!  Russell announced that Billy Saccardi and Joe Fairchild will be Assistant Patrol Leaders (APL’s) this year. Russell will call all three patrol leaders who will, in turn, call their patrol members with Scout news or meeting reminders. Please be on the lookout as this is one of our main methods of communication.

NEEDED ASAP! A Popcorn Kernel-  That would be a person to be in charge of collecting popcorn order forms, placing the master order, and picking up the popcorn. Interested? If so, call Phillip Ramsey now!

Temporary Secretary Needed! Neither TIces nor Kelleys will be at the Greenbar / Committee meeting September 20. So, a volunteer is needed to sit in on the Committee Meeting (parent part), take notes, and get out the September Newsletter. Please help!

Pool Party – Wear your suits and bring your family or friends to the Outdoor Pool at Fort Detrick.  Meet there at 7:00 pm Thurs., August 30.  This activity is free to Scouts.  Others must pay $2.00.

Merit Badges – Have fun and work toward merit badges too!  Come to the meetings at Camp Baker for “Leave No Trace” on September 6 and “American History” September 13.  Learn about logging and see a logging demonstration at the September 27 meeting!  See more information about weekly meetings on the Troop Meeting Plan at the end of the Newsletter.

Honor Patrol – “What’s an Honor Patrol?” you ask.  Dr. Turell knows all about this “point scale system” whereby members of Patrols can earn points for their Patrol by, for instance; showing up for meetings, wearing Class A’s, winning games, etc.  The patrol earning the distinction of “Honor Patrol” may, as examples: get first choice of prime camp sites, go on outings, or get treats.  Honor Patrols will be recognized at October, December, and June Court of Honors.  Scouts and Leaders will discuss this further.  Once the point scale system is devised, be watching for communication from Troop Scribe, Zachary Bergeron.

Annual Dues – Hank Fairchild will send out a letter by September 7 via e-mail outlining Scout dues.  All dues must be paid by the October 11 Court of Honor.  Checks, payable to Troop 278 may be mailed to Treasurer, Judy Saccardi at 5304 Mica Court, Middletown, 21769.

Got Rank?  Keep working toward rank. Here is a list of upcoming COURT OF HONOR dates:

October 11 – Camp BakerDONUTS AND CIDER PROVIDED ’round the campfire. Bring families!

December 6 / 7 – MUMC (Tentative date)~ Pot Luck Dinner

June 5 – Camp Baker (Tentative date)~ Picnic Supper

Tree Lot – During the holiday season, Scouts will again be selling Christmas tress in the Safeway parking lot.  Committee voted that the lot remain open during Thursday evening Scout meetings.  Adults who work Thursdays can either earn Scout Bucks for themselves, or for their sons.

Ski Trip – Mark your calendars for the January 25-27 ski outing to Timberline in West Virginia.  The go-to gal is Mrs. Tice who reports that Scouts can ski or snowboard through Sunday mid-morning.  Cost of lift tickets, food, lodging,  ski rental, and gas is $175.  A $50.00 deposit will be due in November.

***Philmont- Tentative dates for this high adventure camp are August 5-17, 2008.  Mr. Ramsey continues calling staff   there—in hopes that, if contingency troops drop out, WE can slip into their date slots. In that way, Scouts involved with High School sports can participate in each!  He will devise a payment schedule and ask for a deposit soon so that we might get a handle on the number of those wishing to participate. Start saving your pennies now. Cost: $1,500-$1,800?

Respectfully submitted,

 Nancy Kelley
